Initiating An Open Scholarship Community at the University of Rochester
There is growing interest in improving the quality, accessibility, and efficiency of research through open science/scholarship initiatives. We have initiated an open scholarship community at the University of Rochester (OSC Rochester). In this kick-off event, Dr. Ana Peršić from the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), will speak to us about the role of open science practices and values in advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Following her presentation, we'll have a casual discussion about upcoming plans for OSC Rochester. We look forward to brainstorming ideas for community activities and events that encourage interaction and collaboration to promote open scholarship practices at Rochester.

Sustainability Through Openness: UNESCO's Global Quest for Equitable Development
At the University of Rochester (UR), we are invested in tackling the biggest challenges of the future. And what would be bigger than contributing to any of the seventeen United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)? An equitable future for all requires free flow of ideas and information between researchers and the communities that might benefit from that information. Join us for this event, sponsored by the Open Scholarship Community Rochester (OSC Rochester) and UR Libraries, to learn how UNESCO is applying the principles of Open Science and Open Scholarship to advance the SDGs and make the world ever better.
Speaker: Dr. Ana Peršić, Programme Specialist - Science, Technology, and Innovation Policy Section, UNESCO. An ecologist by training (Master in Ecological Sciences at the University of Padova, Italy and PhD in Ecotoxicology at the University of Paris South, France), Dr Ana Peršić joined UNESCO in April 2006 as Assistant Programme Specialist serving the UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere Programme within the Division of Ecological and Earth Sciences. She then served as Science Specialist at the UNESCO Liaison Office in New York from 2011 to 2018. Her work relates to strengthening the science-policy interface and the promotion of science technology and innovation in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. Since 2019, her focus has been on open science – she coordinated the development of the 2021 UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science and is currently working towards its implementation.
